Two of the biggest top flight football leagues in Europe, Italy’s Serie A and Spain’s La Liga, kick off with their respective new seasons this weekend.
Contrary to popular belief, La Liga is far from a two-club contest. Although Barcelona dominated the competition last season by completing a treble, another Spanish club in Sevilla topped the UEFA Europa League. Meanwhile, Copa del Rey runnerup Athletic Bilbao ran roughshod over Barça at the 2015 Supercopa de España.
Over in Italy, Juventus was one UEFA Champions League victory away from a treble. Alas, the Turin-based club succumbed to the rampaging blue and red squad from Spain. Le Zebre will unearth a new era starting this season as statesman Andrea Pirlo played his final match for the club.
